EIP Sign – Chlorine Emergency Information Panel Sign

Chlorine Emergency Information Panel Sign –  The Chlorine Emergency Information Panel (EIP) Sign is essential for safety and emergency preparedness in environments where chlorine is used, transported, or stored. Its main purposes include:

  1. Chemical Identification: The sign clearly identifies chlorine, a highly toxic and corrosive gas, ensuring that everyone on-site or responding to an emergency knows what hazardous substance is present.
  2. Hazard Communication: It provides critical information about the specific hazards associated with chlorine, such as its toxic fumes, corrosiveness to skin and eyes, and potential to cause severe respiratory damage when inhaled. Chlorine can also react violently with other substances.
  3. Safety Precautions: The panel typically outlines the personal protective equipment (PPE) required when handling or working near chlorine, such as gas masks, chemical-resistant clothing, and proper ventilation procedures. This helps to prevent accidental exposure.
  4. Emergency Response Instructions: In the event of a chlorine leak or spill, the sign guides first responders on how to control the situation. This includes information on safe evacuation distances, appropriate firefighting measures, and how to stop or contain chlorine leaks safely.
  5. Health and First Aid Procedures: It provides first aid instructions for exposure, such as immediate evacuation to fresh air in case of inhalation, flushing eyes or skin with water, and seeking medical help immediately. These steps are vital to minimizing harm to individuals exposed to chlorine.

Specialist Advice Field – What to Add

On all Emergency Information Panel (EIP) Signs, there is a section labelled “Specialist Advice”. This is where you can add contact details for immediate technical or emergency response advice.

For example, you can include:

  • Company emergency phone number (e.g. 0800 XXX XXX)

  • On-site chemical specialist or health & safety officer contact

  • Emergency response contractor details (e.g. CHEMCALL, if your company is subscribed, or another provider)

  • Internal HSE department contact

👉 If you don’t have a specialist service, you can still include a company name and phone number so first responders know who to contact immediately.

NOTE: If you wish to use 0800 CHEMCALL, please note that this service is operated by Responsible Care NZ and permission/approval must be obtained directly from them prior to use.

The Chlorine EIP Sign includes critical identification details such as UN 1017, HAZCHEM 2R, and a field for Specialist Advice contact information.
Learn when and where these signs must be used under NZS 5433 and WorkSafe NZ guidelines in Emergency Information Panel Signs Explained.

The 2R HAZCHEM code indicates that chlorine should be cooled with fine water spray, while full evacuation is required if leakage or fire cannot be contained.
Find out what each emergency code means and how responders interpret them in Understanding HAZCHEM Signs in New Zealand & Australia.

Chlorine gas is both Class 2.3 – Toxic Gas and Class 5.1 – Oxidising Substance, meaning it poses severe inhalation and fire risks.

FAQs

Q1. Why do I need this Chlorine Emergency Information Panel Sign?
Because chlorine is a highly toxic gas that can cause respiratory distress and severe eye or skin irritation on exposure. This panel ensures emergency crews instantly recognise the chemical type and appropriate response actions.

Q2. Where should it be used?
Install at chlorine storage tanks, cylinder racks, filling stations, and transport vehicles carrying bulk chlorine. It must be visible from the approach path of emergency vehicles and in line with NZS 5433 visibility guidelines.

Q3. What goes in the “Specialist Advice” section?
Include your company’s 24/7 emergency number, HSE contact, or authorised response service such as CHEMCALL (0800 243 622) — subscription required — so first responders can access expert guidance immediately.

Magnetic mounting option for the Chlorine Emergency Information Panel Sign

Flexible, vehicle-grade magnetic placards with the Chlorine Emergency Information Panel Sign printed on premium vinyl, laminated, and mounted to automotive magnetic sheeting. They stick to ferrous steel panels and remove without residue—ideal for vehicles that only carry DG sometimes.

Who they’re for

  • Contractors / couriers who transport Dangerous Goods occasionally

  • Hire or multi-use vehicles (no permanent signage)

  • Sites that swap classes depending on load (quick changeover)

  • Magnet: vehicle-grade sheet, 0.8–1.0 mm thick (30–40 mil), high-energy.

  • Face film: outdoor self-adhesive vinyl + UV laminate (gloss).

  • Operating temp: suitable from winter cold to summer heat (typical automotive range).

Where they work (and don’t)

  • Works on: painted steel panels that are flat, clean, and smooth.

  • Doesn’t work on: aluminium, stainless, plastics, composites, heavy body filler; vinyl wraps, ceramic coatings, heavily textured paint.

  • If customers have aluminium doors/ute trays, suggest self-adhesive or rigid ACM instead.

Fitment checklist

  1. Clean & dry the panel (no wax/polish).

  2. Warm, flat magnet—no curl.

  3. Apply to flat steel only; press from centre out.

  4. Do not bridge panel gaps, ribs or sharp curves.

  5. Remove daily to clean/dry both surfaces; store flat.

  6. In heavy rain/highway speeds, check edges haven’t lifted.

Care & maintenance

  • Remove and wipe after wet weather; store flat (never rolled tight).

  • Move position slightly each week to avoid differential fading.

  • Avoid use on freshly resprayed paint (allow full cure).

Compliance note

  • Magnet is a mounting method. The operator must ensure placards are the correct class, size, and securely affixed for the journey. Some carriers or site rules may require permanent/rigid placards—check your procedure.
